in this issue:
Are
your OS and applications vulnerable?
You
may not be
aware that your computer has vulnerable applications installed. Here
comes a tool that you can perform a check. Go to : http://secunia.com/software_inspector.
This website
provides online testing against vulnerable OS and
applications and provides the corresponding patching resources.
We
had tried it on our
servers and found
some applications including : Flash, Thunderbird, JRE are not
update enough and possess security risk. So, we made use of the
patching resources there to upate our servers.
There
is
also an installable package free for home users. Finally,
there is
yet a network version which gives you central manageability of software
versions and patches at preset time intervals. Certainly, this
version costs you something.

Switching
from
Outlook Express to Thunderbird
Recently,
CPTTM has
migrated the mail clients of all users from Outlook Express to
Thunderbird. The main
reason for that is we would like to store users' emails on to a central
network stoarge but Outlook Express requires the emails be stored
locally while for Thuderbird, emails can be stored in network drive.
Besides, Thunderbird has other benifits, like:
- Built-in
RSS reader
- Spell
checking
- Plenty
of add-ons, including calendar, themes, inline browser etc.
Cyberlab
has been using Thunderbird for more than 2 years and find it quite good
except there are some known flaws:
- The
MIME associations may some time mixed up - one user has met this
problem 3 times.
- The
emails index file may needed to be rebuilt - It occurs several times
but this is done automatically, just taking your some time.
