Topics in this issue:

Becoming a network architectCCDA

If you've been working as a network administrator for years, how to advance your career to the next level? You should proceed to learn how to design networks. That is, given the requirements of the customer, you will create a blueprint to describe a network that will provide the performance, reliability and security. Then you'll let others implement your design by setting up the network devices.

Ready to go? Take our upcoming course Designing reliable, high performance and secure networks which will also enable you to take the CCDA exam (Cisco Certified Design Associate).

Centralized control of IE or Firefox settingsfirefox

If you need to configure the settings of IE or Firefox for the staff, Instead of doing it manually on each computer, a much better way is to use IEAK (for IE) or CCK (for Firefox). They allow you to create a customized or add-on package to configure the settings for the browser. Then you can use a centralized deployment mechanism such as Active Directory or wpkg to deploy it to all the computers.

We just did it at CPTTM to configure the bookmarks and the trusted CA cert in Firefox on all our computers. It works like a charm.

Preventing a process from monopolizing CPU

Sometimes a process may go out of control and consume all the CPU, bringing the server to its knee. To prevent this problem, if you're running Linux, you can use cpulimit to limit the CPU utilization of a process to, say, 20%. Then even if that process is in trouble, it won't affect other services. We have used it successfully to limit the CPU utilization of a VM (which runs as a process).
