Topics
in this issue:
Three
things you must know about IPv6
Asia
has run out of IPv4. You and other people will be unable to
get new IPv4 addresses very soon. To prepare for this situation, you
must understand the following:
- Many mobile clients will get IPv6 addresses
only in the future. So you need to assign IPv6 addresses to your
existing IPv4 servers (called "dual stack" as a server
supports both IPv4 and IPv6).
- Your new public servers
will get IPv6 addresses only in the future. So you
need a translation gateway to let existing outside IPv4
clients access them.
- How to translate? IPv6
is NOT just a larger address format; it is a completely different
network layer protocol from IPv4. Their
relationship is more
like IP vs NetBEUI. So, there is NO simple way to
translate a packet between IPv4 and IPv6 (NAT is out). To translate between them, you can do it on a
higher layer such as the transport layer (TCP proxy)
or application
layer (e.g., HTTP proxy).
To learn more about these to prepare for the
transition, you may take our IPv6
training.
IT
change management course
I'd recommend ALL IT administrators take our IT
change management course.
You'll learn how to carefully plan and test the changes
you're going to make to minimize the risk of outages. This will prove
very much valuable to your organization.
Getting
informed of security patches
How do you know that if there is a
new security patch available
for your OS, a particular service or application? If you don't keep
track of such patches, you could be hacked easily. So, you may need to
subscribe to the advisory mailing list of each vendor, but actually
there is an easier way: subscribe to the ATOM
newsfeed of CERT. CERT gathers all such information and
distribute it to all the subscribers. We're using it and find it very
useful.
Automating
network configuration
If you have lots of routers and switches to manage,
you may consider automating their configuration. That is, instead of
manually configuring each one, you set up a master configuration and
let it magically be deployed to multiple devices. Usually this kind of
tools (e.g., CiscoWorks)
are very expensive, but now there is an open source alternative called Netomata
Config Generator. The idea is not that you must rely on a
free tool, but that you can test such an automation tool in a lab or in
a pilot to get used to working in an automated fashion.
